How does the leader communicate how he wants the song to be sung? Of course, this presumes that the leader has a preference. If he just beats time, it's going to default to the front bench leads.

For those of us who remember seeing Mr. Richard Moss lead the Blue Ridge Style of Christian Harmony, there can be no mistake about how a good leader communicates to the singers. The best way I can describe it was he was dancing a ballet! His entire body was moving, he raised and lowered his arms, he floated on his toes, he swayed with the tempo, he walked across the platform in front of everyone - especially during fugues to cue the singers. His face was very expressive, appropriate to the words he was singing. Words of suffering brought grimaces; words of admonition raised his eyebrows; words of comfort closed his eyes; words of heaven brought expressions of great joy....it was all there. It was more than the tune, it was the poetry that he conveyed as well.

Singers would look at each other and shiver when we were through with his song, and most often my father would ask him to lead extra ones, and no one ever complained. My personal favorite that he led was David's Lamentation.

It was pure, unadulterated expression from a deep, emotional place that he was not afraid to share with us - we idolized him. We strove to also sing from the emotional place in us that he touched - we became very vulnerable and willing to share something very personal and, I daresay, spiritual that he elicited.

Does anyone have any videos/recordings of him? If so, can we get them posted on the BRCHS website?
