I have heard it described as such and some of us do regularly sing from both books. But, beyond the singings, are there other possibilities?

How about a two day event with both singing and maybe speakers and  / or workshops? Could we interest musicologists, historians and other academics?

Who and what are potential resources that we may not have considered, or once considered and lst track of?

I have often referred to Christian Harmony in Western North Carolina as "brothers and sisters across the mountains." The travel between our groups has brought us close together. And now we also gather in upper East Tennessee as Don organizes singings.

I would love to attend a Singing School which talk about both books. Certainly Jonathan and Nathan would be good teachers. I am excited about the new printing and hope to see a book and attend a singing soon. (Which book will Newland singing use?) Ann

Glad to see you here as I try to resurrect this forum.

I had to cancel the Newland (Avery County) singing due to lack of interest.

I am willing to consider singing schools. Our last two attempts (in Bristol) do not seem to have generated any new singers. I do know of plans being made for a school in the Spring in North Carolina. But, I am trying to think outside that box.

An interesting thing to me is that the New Harp has not gone through the excision, addition, revision, restoration processes to the same extent that Christian Harmony has.

The more I think about it, the more I know Jeff Farr would be the best Singing School teacher.

And Greenville is just the right distance between us.

I don't know anything about the Christian Harmony revisions but you may remember that the songs previously deleted from the New Harp of Columbia were put back in as an appendix in the 2001 revision.

Hi Ann!
I would like to say that Don recently pointed me in the direction of the Folkways recording of the Old Harp Singers and I got cold chills! I'm from the CH tradition in WNC - learned from my father Quay Smathers and many other old timers since I was about 5 or 6 and that recording sounded like what I heard back then! I have never sung out of the New Harp of Columbia, but would love to do so one day! Since I live in Ohio, I probably won't be able to get down to a singing school, but I'm ordering that recording because I have to hear more!

Also, yes, my sisters and I are planning a CH singing school, The Quay Smathers Memorial Singing School, for early April. Location and exact date are currently being confirmed. We hope to teach the Blue Ridge style of CH that day and a big part of it will be listening to recordings of the old masters. Hopefully Don will be able to help us out with that part of it! Wink

There will be a limited number of spaces as we plan to go into some depth about the legacy we want to preserve, and want to give as much individual attention to the participants as possible. I'll keep everyone posted on the forum about exact date and location and the registration process! (There will be NO charge, but registration will be required so we can plan accordingly.)

All best,
Liz Smathers Shaw

Hi Liz,

I have known of Quay Smathers for years and am sorry I never met him. I'm so glad to hear of the Singing School. Please do let me know the dates so I can put it on my calendar. So good to hear from you.

What you DON'T have in NHC is someone deciding in the mid 50's to drop in a bunch of gospel songs. Now, the 1873 CH has a number of gospel "flavored" songs, precursors, perhaps. The songs added in the 50's were popular, but is was not Walker's work..But people wanted to sing them. And, imo and to my taste, there is nothing wrong with them.

I just think that Walker's work, AS a body of work merits preservation and the 2015 book does exactly that.
