Ornamentation
Sounds like this
Recently at my monthly singing, I was questioned about what it was I was doing with my voice when I was singing what was not written on the page. Now, this woman was actually a professional singer with a fine voice (former member of Robert Shaw Chorale, a native and very respectful of our tradition, perfect pitch but did not harp on it.)
Since I had never been asked that question, I did not have a very good answer. All I could say was, “Well, I’ve heard it done that way and I like the way it sounds and feels.” She seemed to be satisfied; or at least she let it go.
But, I’d like to think and learn about it and understand what part it plays in the old tradition.
